In the heart of the city look for the ruins of Palazzo di Diocleziano--a significant example of Roman architecture and a World Heritage Site. Between 295 and 305 CE, the Roman Emperor built the palace near his birthplace as his retirement home. Walk under the Silver Gate and enter the the Peristyle, the central open-air area. Opposite the gate is the medieval church of St. Dominic, formerly Diocletian's Mausoleum. Admire the excavated remains of the palace's basement. Look for the two granite sphinxes, which Diocletian brought from Egypt. One is still on the Peristyle, and the second sits headless in front of Jupiter's temple. Great place. Beautiful white stone buildings. Lovely little walkway. It will not give you a "wow" feeling but a wonderful warm peaceful atmosphere. And GOT fans. You all will love it. Bonus lots of GOT related shops

Split is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and the Palace is one of its centre-pieces. The old city square will make you feel as if you were back in ancient Roman times. Visit Split, but take care of it, as well, because recent tourist influx threatens its cultural heritage.
