Church of Saint Anne, Jerusalem

4.8
The best-preserved church in Jerusalem, Church of Saint Anne represents a fine example of Romanesque stonemasonry. Built over a presumed dwelling place of Jesus' grandparents and the birthplace of the Virgin Mary, as well as the site of an ancient Byzantine church, this Roman Catholic crusader church dates from 1131-1138. Take in the minimalist design and splendid broken arches, and--if your timing is right--listen to the chanting amplified by the superb acoustics. Turned into a Muslim seminary in 1192 by Saladin, the Ottomans donated the church to the French in 1856. It lies at the beginning of the Via Dolorosa, and offers a unique insight into Christian history and heritage.
