Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Sardinia / Province of Cagliari / Cagliari / Anfiteatro Romano di Cagliari
The Roman Amphitheatre of Cagliari is an ancient Roman amphitheatre, located in the city of Cagliari, southern Sardinia, Italy. The structure, built in the 2nd century AD, was half carved in the rock, while the rest was built in local white limestone, with a façade surpassing 20 m in height. It housed fights between men and animals, of gladiators and other specialized fighters recruited in and outside Sardinia. It was also the seat of public executions. It could house up to 10,000 spectators, some one third of the Roman Caralis. The amphitheatre was no longer in use starting from the 5th century AD and was subsequently used as a free stone quarry by the rulers of the area, from the Byzantines, the Republic of Pisa, the House of Aragon and others. The area was acquired by the comune of Cagliari in the 19th century and excavated under the direction of a clergyman, Giovanni Spano. It is now used for musical presentations, which required the construction of a structure whose presence has raised criticism owing to its size.Make Anfiteatro Romano di Cagliari part of your personalized Cagliari itinerary using our Cagliari day trip planning site.

Anfiteatro Romano di Cagliari Reviews

The amphitheatre was closed when we were there, but you can get good views of it by looking through the fence anyway, so you don't need to go in. It is quite a big site, but the amphitheatre itself..... more »
This historic part of Cagliari takes you back in time to when Romans had had their gatherings, to watch, to discuss, to share communal life. This day the amphitheater is under preservation works and is not open to explore. Nevertheless, you can still view it from above street and take some good pictures.
Looks amazing, but has to be seen, unfortunately from a distance. Frustrating not to be able to get closer, or even more information from the road side. Uphill, but not too much of a walk. It's a site worth seeing, but needs to be developed more to really be appreciated.
