Asinara, Porto Torres

Try to spot the famous white donkeys at Asinara, a national park that comprises the island of Asinara and its coastal waters. Often called Devil's Island, this has served as a quarantine area, World War II prison camp, and one of the most important high-security prisons in Italy during the 1970s. Learn more about these periods at the Fornelli visitor center, and see the former prison. You can wander the island's rocky cliffs, wide bays, and beaches. Stroll through the small fishing village of Cala d'Oliva, and stop for lunch. Book your visit here through an agency, because only licensed boats may sail around the coast. Many of these also offer guided tours. Plan to visit Asinara and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Porto Torres attractions using our Porto Torres trip itinerary builder tool.

  • Beautiful landscapes that make you feel connected with wildlife and nature. Some sites, especially little beaches, are very pretty and the feeling of aloness is priceless. The island seems preserved from tourism. Donkeys are everywhere and you can approach them very closely. Two important advices: 1) take a lot of water with you because there is not a lot of fresh spots, 2) rent a bike because walking from a site to another can be harsh, it will allow you to freely enjoy sites and wildlife. The guided visit (by car) does not offer this priviledge (too quick).
  • Accessible only by little ferry, the a island is a protected land and marine reserve. You can visit it with a tour guide or yourself but only following all the restrictive rules of the Island to preserve the flora and fauna.
