Mezquita Cathedral de Cordoba, Cordoba
Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Andalucia / Province of Cordoba / Cordoba / Mezquita Cathedral de Cordoba
History meets beauty at Mezquita Cathedral de Cordoba, a rare blend of two religions. The massive mosque-turned-cathedral is famed for its "forest" of interior columns, topped with traditional Islamic red and white striped arches. Built in 786 by Moorish settlers, the structure was converted into a Christian church in 1236. Built over the course of nearly 250 years, the structure combines various architectural styles, with decorative elements ranging from elegant to gaudy. Despite the presence of the cathedral, which was added to the middle of the original structure in the 16th century, most of the mosque remains remarkably well preserved. Regarded as one of the most accomplished monuments of Moorish architecture, the site reminds visitors of the glory and importance Córdoba held in medieval times. Mezquita Cathedral de Cordoba Reviews
Vorab. Die Bewertung gilt dem Gesamteindruck. Der arabische, schlichte Teil der Mezquita ist äußerst schön. In seiner Gesamtheit wirklich beeindruckend aber nicht aufdringlich. Ganz anders verhält es ... more »beforehand. The rating is valid for the general evaluation. The Arabic, simple part of the Mezquita is extremely beautiful. In its entirety really impressive but not intrusive. The situation is quite different with the Christian cathedral, which was also installed. This can only be described in the words "prostious, ugly building sin". How one can deface a building that was once impressive in its simplicity is incomprehensible to us. Probably just arrogant stupidity. The cathedral looks like a cancerous ulcer that you would like to cut out. Our eyes have truly offended this failed, overloaded architecture. The Mezquita is still worth looking at. This monster in the middle should be avoided.
What a Beautiful place to visit. Such great history. Recommend going with a guided tour as there is much to see and learn. more »
The most impressive cathedral I have ever seen. There is a very nice walled garden with orange trees and fountains in front. Certainly worth the entrance fee of EUR 10. The inside of the mosque-cathedral is huge, with impressive decorations and breathtaking effects from light and shadows.
Very interesting place with full of history. Beautiful arches structure of the original mosque and added church. The handout leaflet at the entrance is very good in providing background information, timeline, phases. It can be busy in the afternoon. Toilet is no where near enough. No parking nearby. The nearest one is on northwest and you have to walk through the old town.
