One of the oldest cemeteries in Boston, Granary Burying Ground is the final resting place of many important figures in American history. Founding fathers, patriots, and victims of the Boston Massacre lie here--making this an important stop on the Freedom Trail. Among the graves, you'll see the tombstones of three men who signed the Declaration of Independence: Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Robert Treat Paine. The cemetery includes 2,345 graves, but an estimated 5,000 people are buried here. In the center of the cemetery, a 7.6 m (25 ft) tall obelisk marks the tomb of Benjamin Franklin's parents. Granary Burying Ground Reviews
This is one of several historical burial sites in the center of the city. Easily accessible and crammed with pre-revolutionary graves it is an interesting spot for a few moments of quiet... more »
Historic burial ground is very interesting. We enjoyed our visit and were fascinated with the entire site. more »
Peaceful place in the heart of the city’s hustle and bustle. I contemplated while reading the gravestone markers, most of what I read were of people who died young. There were several signs throughout the burying ground showing resting spots of known people like John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin’s family, etc.
Unfortunately this cemetery closes at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and we did not get to enter as the two security guards were just locking the gates. We just viewed it through the fence and we were so disappointed we did not get to stroll up and down the paths to read all these headstones. At least we did get to see Sam Adams headstone which can be seen through the fence. Next time in Boston we would make a point to get to this cemetery during the visiting hours as it is something to see! Highly recommend to check the web site for the hours of this cemetery.
