Create an itinerary including Olavinlinna Castle
Built on an island connecting two lakes, Olavinlinna Castle stands as the northernmost stone fortress from the Middle Ages still intact. Founded in 1475 by Knight Erik Axelsson Tott on behalf of the Swedish Crown, it was constructed to protect the Savo region from Russian forces. Explore the stone castle, take in scenic views of the lakes, and visit the castle museum and Orthodox museum to learn more about the history of the structure and region. View artifacts collected from the fortress, religious icons, and items from Finland and Russia. The Savonlinna Opera Festival has been held here since 1912. • Even our 3,5 year-old was able to sit and listen to the guided tour. Would recommend! You get to go to the tower only with a guide.

  • Beautiful castle, a must see if you are close by! The guided tour allows you to access parts of the castle that you can't visit on your own. Unfortunately it is only in Finnish, but the guide is really friendly and took some time to answer our questions and explain a few things in English.
  • Best castle in Finland. Located in a small yet beautiful town of Savonlinna. Could spend a day or two during summer exploring the town, there are beautiful churches and cafe's. !! Better to check their website for timings before planning the trip !!
