Dating back to the second century, Roman Theatre speaks to the period of Roman rule over Amman, when the city was known as Philadelphia. The construction of the 6,000-seat amphitheater into the hillside at a steep angle kept the sun off spectators and created excellent acoustics, which enabled audience members even at the top seat to hear people in the arena. Today the space, which is located in the heart of downtown, is open to the public and hosts large cultural festivals. Visit the small museum on premises for more information on the site's construction and history. We really enjoyed our visit to this amphitheater. It is quite large (not the largest we saw on our trip) and in good condition for something so old. There is also a second, much smaller amphitheater..... more

Nice touristy place next to downtown market. It’s well lit even after it closes down and has a big concrete area in front where people can sit/walk and have a good time. Dont miss the picture points as they offer a good view of the city.

I’d say this is a place you’d want to see while I’m Jordan. They allow you to climb the steep steps to the very top where there is a nice view and it makes for good pictures. Be careful, the steps are steep and smooth in places so they can be slippery. It’s a low moderate climb to the top, but if you get tired you can always just sit on the seat to the side of the steps. The Jordan Pass allows entry. Some areas smell like pee, and I didn’t see a toilet, which may explain the smell.
