Take a walk around Castelo de Silves, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, with its 11 towers, red walls, and excavation sites. Although the structure that can be seen today was built between the 8th and 13th centuries, excavations have revealed origins dating back to around 201 BCE. Located on a hilltop overlooking the town, the castle serves as a recreation spot, nestled in a landscaped park surrounded by palm trees, benches, and fountains. Great place to wonder around for an hour or so. It is cheap to get in but it is rich in history. The walls a well preserved and can be fully explored. Within the walls there are some interesting excavations. There is a lovely cafe in the middle of the grounds with a nice garden.

We have been in Portugal for nearly a month and THIS is the best castle we have seen. Great history, quite walkable and admission gets you into the museum. Worth the extra couple of Euros. Great views and photo ops atop the castle walls! Easily do it all in a couple of hours!
