Create an itinerary including Castelo de Silves
Take a walk around Castelo de Silves, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, with its 11 towers, red walls, and excavation sites. Although the structure that can be seen today was built between the 8th and 13th centuries, excavations have revealed origins dating back to around 201 BCE. Located on a hilltop overlooking the town, the castle serves as a recreation spot, nestled in a landscaped park surrounded by palm trees, benches, and fountains. See the remains of food stores, Arab silos, and a 10 m (30 ft) tall cistern here. To visit Castelo de Silves and other attractions in Silves, use our Silves trip itinerary site.

  • As we were staying nearby we visited the castle at 9am. It was a great idea because there was hardly anyone else there so we could get a real feel for the place. Also it wasn't too hot at that time.

  • Went on a half-day tour with Coast and Country and were lucky to arrive earlyish in the morning as there were barely any people and no queue to enter - you have to pay, but it's worth it and goes...

  • A great place to visit. Even on a hot day. As there was a cooling breeze on the ramparts. Mostly a rebuilt castle it has some good parts and superb views over the surroundings. The centre of the castle has a stage and a cafe which are great places to chill and grab a drink or bite to eat. There is plenty of shade even on the hottest of days. Really cheap entrance fee.
  • Well preserved Castle. Good walk around will need a minimum one hour. Food and drinks available inside the Castle grounds, nice but small garden. A little parking available but steep streets to walk otherwise, very narrow streets if driving up.
