Create an itinerary including Waimea Bay
Featuring large waves and surfing competitions, Waimea Bay hugs a powdery beach bordered by tropical greenery. Depending on the weather, the ocean can be completely calm, or you can encounter 15 m (50 ft) waves. Visit the beach to lounge in the sun or have a picnic, or walk through the nearby gardens and look at the waterfalls. When the water is calm, you can also swim and snorkel. Beware of the local tradition of rock-jumping--although many visitors do it, the local authorities strictly advise against it. Parking space at the site is very limited. • Also known as Electric Beach. E Beach is great for snorkeling. You have to find the small beach to the right of the pavilion then swim for about 150 yards. Hot water from a factory makes this place a huge attraction for fish and turtles. We also saw a pod of dolphins up close and personal. Amazing, but the dolphins are not the norm. The warm water stream can shoot you our to a strong current so after coming to the surface swim to the side. It's easier that way. Be safe and have fun.
  • I read the reviews about what a fabulous beach this was with fine, soft sand and clear water. And oh, how I was looking forward to a swim! But the first thing I see are signs saying: No Swimming! I talked to the lifeguard who said, "Good luck getting in and out." Apparently, not only are the waves HUGE half the year, but the rest of the time the undertow is tremendous. Also, there is a significant reef which makes getting in and out tricky. On the BRIGHT side, there is very little parking and it's FREE! That was great and a nice surprise! it means there will never be a crowd at this beach!!!
