Create an itinerary including Shangri La
Admire the Middle Eastern and Indian architecture of Shangri La, formerly the private home of heiress Doris Duke. Today, the site is known as a center for Islamic arts and culture, and you can see metalwork, mosaics, vases, and textiles in brilliant colors. Inside the house, you'll also see rare artifacts in various temporary exhibits. Stroll the gardens to see a collection of tropical plants, as well as a pool and water terraces that flow into each other on a cliff overlooking the coast. Tours begin and end at the Honolulu Museum of Art and must be reserved in advance. • This is not a traditional museum but Doris Duke's Islamic Art collection as her home was turned into a museum with her home and Islamic art possessions as exhibits. The wood work and tile work is exquisite and her artifacts fascinating. The building is beautiful and her yard with the view is magnificent! The docents were friendly and knowledgeable. Well worth a visit. Two important points; you need to take a shuttle from the Honolulu Museum of Arts and you need to order tickets well in advance.
  • We had a great experience. The location is stunning, and the collection of works from around the world was amazing to see. Be sure to book in advance as it sells out well ahead of time. The guides were very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Well worth the visit!
